The Honda Insight was the first in 1999. And the Toyota Prius was the first hybrid sedan in 2001.

The first Hybrid car in the U.S.A was the Honda Insight in 2001. It got up to 66mpg highway. It is still the most fuel efficient Hybrid car today. It has a 3 cylinder engine with 89HP and an electric motor. It is still able to keep up with traffic because it was small and light.
The 2nd Hybrid car in America was the Toyota Prius which got up to 58mpg. Some say 60mpg highway.
The 1st American Hybrid car was the Ford Escape SUV.
