How do you know what ratio your rear end is in a 1997 ford truck?

I have a 1997 Ford F250 Light Duty 4.6L. (It looks like the 1997 F150 but with beefier suspension and frame.)

If you are desperate and get nowhere, drop the back-plate of the rear end and count both the ring and pinion gear teeth. Don’t forget a pan underneath to catch the gear oil.
Spray a section off with CRC brake clean and mark a tooth on both gears with a china marker. Divide the small pinion gear teeth into the ring gear tooth total.

There should be a metal tag attached to the diff cover that identifies the size (8.8″, 9.75″, 10.25″ etc.), the ratio which is either a 3.73 or a 4.10 on that particular truck, if I’m not mistaken, and whether or not it is equipped with Traction-Lok. This will be denoted as 3L73 (3.73 ratio locking diff) or 3 73 (3.73 ratio open diff). There should also be another tag that identifies the fluid type to be used (75W140). Hope this helps.
